The Hatchling

You just never know what you’re going to find.  Sitting in the road.  A hatchling painted turtle.  One of our students was astute enough to recognize that this nickel sized bump in the road was indeed a turtle and rescue the little critter.  Of course, this was in the middle of a raging storm, and we brought the turtle back to the house while the storm subsided.  He had a slight injury as well, so we fixed him up and returned him to his swamp as soon as the rain stopped.
Now this event was of particular note because Andy Powell, of Bideford, England, had the honor of rescuing a much larger turtle last year on his birthday which occurred during his visit to the Outer Banks.  This year’s turtle rescue was a few days shy of his birthday and a much, MUCH, smaller turtle.  Here’s Andy and his new buddy!!!
